Around about twenty years ago is the first time I met Jim Hopkins when my wife Lil and I were invited to Jim and Betty’s place for a Christmas get together by their wonderful daughter Deb and her partner Mike -(seems like we have been friends with them forever).
Within the first ten minutes something told me I would like this guy, it was the feeling you get when you first meet someone---the first impression. As it turned out we both enjoyed a joke being told, some you laugh at and some you groan. We exchanged a few and it was great. Somewhere during the evening it was mentioned that he played music and I told him that I had a passing interest as I played a little. Well as anyone knows the one thing about Jim, it was guitars and music for the rest of the evening. He had to show me his music room and the instruments he had made—they were so cool. I thoroughly enjoyed that first meeting--- I had found a kindred spirit.
Later on when Deb and Mike moved to the farm the tradition of the Canada Day picnic started and every year it seemed that somehow Jim and I would end up sitting together under the shade of the trees and we would tell stories, swap jokes and play a few songs. He would tell me about his years growing up in the woods, we would talk about instruments—the best woods or strings use, he would talk about his latest project or what he would change if he did the last one again. I would play a new song I had learned, maybe something that Jim would have not heard before as it may not have been from his two favorite categories, country and western, then wait for his reaction and comments. The summer get together is something I always look forward to, seeing our friends, enjoying the food and the fireworks but it seems the one thing I looked to most of all was spending some time with Jim under those trees and playing some music. I always went home with a smile thinking about something he had said or a story he had told, I will miss that.
So Jim: Keep one tuned up for me, someday we will do another tune and you can finally teach me the words to that tobacco song.
